01

Light as a message

Most information about distant objects reaches us as light. Telescopes record different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, and each range reveals different properties of cosmic objects.

A spectrum separates light by wavelength. Scientists use it to determine composition, temperature, motion, and other characteristics of matter.

02

Why do we need different telescopes?

Visible light shows only part of the story. Infrared observations can see through dust and study colder objects, while X-ray and gamma-ray observations reveal highly energetic processes.

Combining measurements from different observatories produces a fuller picture than a single image or instrument can provide.

03

How are conclusions checked?

A scientific explanation must rest on measurements, a method, and repeated checking. New data can refine models, so it is essential to distinguish an established result from a preliminary interpretation.

Primary sources such as mission pages, data sets, and scientific papers show what was observed and where the conclusion has limits.
