A space mission is a planned operation by a spacecraft or crew with specific scientific or technological goals. Its work includes preparation, launch, instrument operations, data transmission, and analysis.
Missions differ in destination and method: some observe the Universe from space, while others investigate planets, asteroids, or Earth.

Robots and people in space
Robotic spacecraft can work where people cannot yet travel safely or easily. They photograph, measure, sample environments, and send data back to Earth.
Crewed missions let people carry out research in space and test systems for future exploration. The two approaches complement one another.
03
Data returns to Earth
Scientific instruments turn light, particles, fields, or samples into measurements. Those data are sent through communication networks, checked by specialists, and compared with earlier observations.
An image is only part of a result. Spectra and measurements of temperature, composition, and motion often provide a more precise answer.
